The important of Employer and Maid Relationship - In many households across Asia and beyond, foreign domestic helpers play an essential role. They cook, clean, care for the elderly, and raise children—all while being far from their own families. For decades, they have been the backbone of many homes, allowing employers to pursue careers and maintain balance. However, as we move deeper into the 21st century, it is time we re-examine how society views and treats these workers — especially through the lens of modern values, human rights, and mutual respect.
The Employer's Mindset: A Critical Element
The thoughts and attitudes of employers shape the daily lives of foreign domestic workers. Unfortunately, in some cases, these thoughts are still rooted in outdated mindsets—remnants of the colonial or "coolie" era where laborers were seen as inferior or less deserving of basic dignity. Such a mindset leads to mistreatment, lack of empathy, and a toxic home environment that affects both the worker and the family they serve.
But times have changed. This is no longer the world of silent obedience and blind servitude. In today's Gen Z-influenced society, human rights, equity, and compassion are cornerstones of ethical behavior. If we expect our children to grow up understanding fairness and respect, we must first embody those values ourselves—especially in our treatment of those who live and work under our roofs.
Beyond the Paycheck: Respect and Humanity
Paying someone a salary does not give us the right to control their lives or strip away their dignity. A domestic helper may be an employee, but they are also a person—with dreams, emotions, and families of their own. Employers must ask themselves, Would I want my daughter to be treated this way if she worked abroad?" If the answer is no, then it's time to change.
Respect can be shown in many ways: allowing adequate rest, respecting personal space, offering fair and kind communication, and involving them in conversations as fellow humans rather than subordinates.
The Gen Z Influence: A Shift Toward Equality
Generation Z is more socially conscious than any generation before. They speak out against injustice, fight for marginalized communities, and demand inclusivity. As Gen Z begins to form families and employ domestic help, their mindset can be the catalyst for long-overdue change. For them, it’s not just about hiring help—it's about building a respectful relationship based on trust and fairness.
Conclusion: Changing Mindsets, Changing Lives
The time has come to leave behind outdated ways of thinking. As the world moves forward, so should we. A domestic worker is not a servant from the past—they are a partner in running a home, and they deserve respect, rights, and recognition.
Let’s evolve together. Let’s treat people with the dignity they deserve, not just because it’s legally or socially expected—but because it’s the right thing to do.
